I was inspired to make candle holders when I visited Mark Smith's studio. Mark makes wonderful wind chimes from aluminum pipes. My first candelabrum was made from copper pipes that were left over from a plumbing project. I used only a torch, copper pipes, solder, and some imagination. I fabricated the candelabrum on the left in 1998. It is one of my favorites. This piece received an Honorable Mention Award in The Best of Tennessee Crafts 2000 Biennial Exhibit. I made this candelabrum in October of 1999. The surface of the copper has a greenish patina which was produced by applying a mixture of ammonia, salt, water and copper sulphate. The surface was then sealed with polyurethane. Click on the image for an enlarged view. |
The book that introduced me to metalworking was The Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight, published by Davis Publications, Inc. in 1991. A fantastic source of information about patinas can be found in The Colouring, Bronzing and Patination of Metals by Richard Hughes and Michael Rowe, published by Watson-Guptill Publications.
