CHEMISTRY 1010 FALL 2005
TEXT:
Chemistry For Changing Times by John Hill & Doris Kolb The chemistry 1010-1020 series is geared primarily for the non-science major. We will cover certain pages from Chapter 1 to Chapter 8. The purpose of this course is to give you an overview of chemistry and how it impacts on your life. I try to make chemistry enjoyable, so work with me. There are copies of the quizes from Fall 2004 Chem 1010 in the library and in Foster Hall Resource Room 133. You can make copies at the library. I will also have one current and two earlier editions of Hill & Kolb at the library, which you can check out for 2 hours at a time. There will be free tutoring Mon-Thurs in Room 133 of Foster Hall.. We will have weekly multiple choice quizzes. I do not do makeup quizzes, but allow you to drop your lowest quiz. If you are sick and miss a class, let me know. That will count as your drop, but if you are sick again and miss another quiz, I can make an adjustment and not average a zero grade. If you just decide to use your drop quiz and then get sick, sorry! Quiz grades will be posted by a 6-digit number of your choosing outside my office at Room 323, Foster Hall on a bulletin board. Check your grade after each test. Sometimes the computer fails to read an answer, or you have put your sheet in the wrong pile or worse yet, doesn't read your test at all. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK AND MAKE SURE YOUR GRADE IS CORRECT. If there is a problem, see me. The lab grade will count as 25% of your CHEM 1010 grade. The laboratory grade given to me by your lab instructor will account for 80% of your lab grade. I will give a lab final in lecture which will count for the other 20% of your lab grade.

Lab will count for 25% of your CHEM 1010 grade. For Dr. Jackson’s lecture class, a portion of the 25% will be a lab final given during the lecture period on Dec 1st . If you know you are going to have to miss a lab, ask your instructor for permission to attend another lab meeting that same week. Lab makeup days are not given. If you miss a lab due to an illness, obtain a notice from your physician or registered nurse. This will result in your not having a zero averaged into your grade. You should consult with your lab instructor if you miss a lab since excuses are at his/her discretion. If you are repeating CHEM 1010 had obtained a lab average of 80 or above you may not have to repeat the lab. See your instructor for such permission. It is your responsibility to have your previous instructor/professor provide your current professor with this grade. The previous grade will be averaged with your current lecture grade in determining your current them CHEM 1010 final grade. Quizzes are given in the individual laboratories at the discretion of your instructor. No open-toed shoes or sandals are allowed in the laboratory. Caution should be used if you wear nice clothes as some chemicals cause stains or holes in clothing materials. If you have long flowing hair, pull it back with an elastic band. GOGGLES WILL BE WORN AT ALL TIMES IN THE LABORATORY. You will not be allowed in the lab without goggles. No exceptions! Goggles are available from the bookstore and from the ACS affiliates. |
