NADH*H NAD FADH*H FAD

FMN --------------> CoQ ------------> Cyto C -----------> H2O

ADP ATP ADP ATP ADP ATP

Located in the mitochondria Energy = ATP

Poisons affect ETS
            Rotenone (insecticide) hits FMN
            Cyanide ties up the cytochromes and turns system off

NADH*H -----> NAD 2.5 ATP GENERATED Older texts have 3 ATP

FADH*H -----> FAD 1.5 ATP GENERATED Older texts have 2 ATP

42% of energy stored as ATP
58% free energy dissipated to surroundings

SPECIAL NOTE

When NADH*H is made in the cytoplasm, it is difficult for it to pass through the membrane to the mitochondria, so it maneuvers around and only 1.5 ATP's are generated in the muscle and brain. Another pathway exists for the heart and liver and 2.5 ATP's are generated.

Cytoplasm NADH*H -----> NAD = 1.5 ATP
Mitochondria NADH*H ---> NAD = 2.5 ATP
