Introduction to Glass

3 credit hours, no prerequisites

Course Objectives:

To expose introductory and non-majors to the basic glass working techniques while also providing a general overview of the history of glass and the role glass plays in everyday life.

The students will learn many of the different ways in which glass can be formed and manipulated. They will also learn extensively about how glass is currently being used in modern technology.

Instructional Plan:

Slide lectures, demonstrations, discussion, reading, written assignments.

Materials:

Basic tools are provided. Any additional tools, colored glass, No. 2 welding glasses, paper respirator must be purchased by the students.

Text: Walt's Glass Guide., A Short History of Glass by Chloe Zerwick. Students are not required to purchase either text but a 8.5x11 legal pad is required.

Evaluation of Grade:

Final critique of finished projects, attendance (3 or more absences will result in 1 grade reduction & being late 3 times will count as 1 absence), individual initiative and attitude, and written examination will determine grade. Anyone caught plagiarizing or cheating will automatically receive a "F".

Letter Grade Definitions

A - This implies great effort and great success in each project. This grade is awarded to the occasional person who exhibits tremendous effort and motivation and participation.

B - A very good job. The person earning this grade has worked very hard: has pushed him/herself beyond the mere fulfilled of each assignment and has shown obvious growth in technical and conceptual skills.

C - The student earning this grade has fulfilled the requirements of the course, worked fairly hard and did a good job.

D - Below par. This grade indicates the student had a difficult time grasping the basic skills and/or trouble fulfilling the requirements of the class.
