Fall 2001 - Information for Chemistry 1010, Section 001 - Instructor: Dr.
Tom Furtsch
Dear Chemistry 1010 Student:
Because of my absence from campus until late Wednesday night, this Class will
not meet again until Friday, August 25th . Here is some information you will
need to digest and some things you should accomplish before class meets on
Friday.
1. Have copies of the text book, and lab manual by the time class meets
Friday.
- Text: General, Organic and Biochemistry, Connecting
Chemistry To Your Life, Blei and Odian (Freeman, 2001) .
- Lab Manual: Chemical Laboratory For The Non-science Student,
Furtsch, et.al.
- Make sure that you have goggles for lab and any other items you will need,
when it meets for the first time. (Lab will meet in Room 201
for lab lecture. The first week we will check in only. So meet
in Room 210, get the safety information check into lab and then you can go
home.)
2. Go to a campus computer lab and get yourself logged onto the TTU campus
network. Instructions are on the wall of the lab in Foster Hall Room 326.
- You should learn to log on to your account on the TTU Email system using
Outlook or Web Mail (see icons on startup screen) and be able to send and
receive messages. We will be using this method of communicating a lot
this semester.
- You can usually logon for the first time by typing your name which will be
the first three initials followed by the last 4 digits of your SS#.
Your initial password will be your SS# with no hyphens. If you have
trouble, ask the student assistant in the lab.
- Send me and e-mail message at address tfurtsch@tntech.edu
to show me that you are logged on and ready to go.
- You may use the computing lab in Foster Hall 326 (third floor to the left
around the corner.) You should become familiar with this room and
other labs like it around campus. Search around and find them.
There are many places you can do computing and access the World Wide Web on
campus.
3. Using MS-Internet Explorer or Netscape,
check out the Chemistry 101 WEB page, for this section and familiarize yourself
with the resources available there.
- The URL for our page is http://iweb.tntech.edu/chem101-tf/.
- My Home page is found at http://iweb.tntech.edu/tfurtsch/,
and you can also access the course page and several others from that
address.
- ALL information pertinent to this section will be published at one of
these web sites.
- Make yourself a copy of the course syllabus and lab schedule from
the web page.
You should have plenty of questions for me when we meet on Friday regarding
course content, grading, exams. etc. We will "hit the ground running".
