Chemistry 1010 for Fall, 2001

TEXTS:

Purpose of this Course

Chemistry 1010 and Chemistry 1020 is series of courses which meet the General Education requirement for University science courses. These two courses in General Chemistry intend to acquaint non-science students with some concepts, theories, laws, chemical terminology, and mathematical relationships, thereby hopefully gaining a sound foundation for further study. Both descriptive and theoretical chemistry will be presented. Descriptive chemistry consists of the tabulation of properties as observed or as determined by experiment. Theoretical chemistry consists of the formulation of principles for systematically correlating the facts of descriptive chemistry. A student taking this course can expect to obtain, upon successful completion of the course, any or all of the following: An increase in his or her

Your grade will in some measure be an indicator as to how well this course has met these goals for you. As for the student whose curriculum does not require additional formal training in chemistry after one year of study, it is hoped that a better understanding of the nature of chemistry and the contributions of chemistry to mankind will be acquired.

VAX Accounts:
Each student in Chemistry 101 should activate their VAX account and learn to use it to receive and send e-mail. In most cases your account will be automatically activated by registering for the course. Much information and class give-and-take will be available to you from the VAX by e-mail and from my home page address above. Learn how to do this.  To begin, you each should log onto the VAX and make sure that you can send and receive mail in a timely fashion.  Try out the World Wide Web and log onto my home page. There is much information there.

Lab Safety Rules: you are responsible for knowing these rules and abiding by correct procedures in lab.
