Please supplement Appendix D with the examples below.

 

Example 1 is an example of a 2x2 solution using augmented matrices.  This is the problem that the author uses as an example in Appendix D, worked out as a triangular matrix to the right of the augmented portion.  Study the solution to see how it differs from the book:

 

Example 2.  The system has already been changed to an augmented matrix.  The equations in the system were x-5y=8 and 4x-19y=28.

Example 3.  The next example has 3 variables.  Missing variables have 0 as their coefficients.  This is problem 12 from the book.

 

Example 4.  Another example of a 3x3.  This one has no "missing" terms.  This is problem 10 from the book.

 

Example 5.  An example of an inconsistent system.  This is problem 18.

 

Example 6. An example of a dependent system.  This is problem 20.
