Art 2610 - Introduction to Fibers

Art 2610 Introduction to Fibers is designed to give the student experience in two major fibers areas, surface design and weaving.

The surface design component covers various methods of achieving pattern on fabric including stitch and clamp resists, stamping, and painting. In-class discussions will cover color theory and design, dye mixing and dye chemistry. Students will be encouraged to work towards developing personal design motifs while learning the application methods. Hand and machine sewing basics are included.

The weaving component covers the basics of weaving on 4-8 harness floor looms. This includes familiarization of the loom and its components, dressing the loom, how to weave, and how to design handwoven cloth using a variety of traditional and contemporary "fibers." Experience cutting and sewing handwoven fabric is included.

Areas of Emphasis in Art 2610 are:

bullet1. Learning and creatively exploring the various processes introduced in the class.
bullet2. Developing individual creative projects within the broader understanding of materials and techniques.
bullet3. Developing technical skill in the making of samples and finished projects.
bullet4. Learning and applying proper and safe handling of all dyes and chemicals, and safe studio practices.
bullet5. Creation and maintenance of a fibers notebook. This will include all handouts, instructions, class notes, a bibliography of relevant books and magazines, sketches of project ideas; photos, and photocopied information pertinent to the course content and to the student's creative interests.
bullet6. Developing sound craftsmanship.
