Prerequisite: Full Admission to the Teacher Education
Program
Co-requisite: FOED 3800
Major Teaching Methods: The major teaching methods will include lecture,
class discussion, and group activities.
Instructional Material: Tennessee Science Standards and household items
used to conduct hands-on experiments in class.
Course Description: ELED 4140 Lec. 2 Credit 2 Science for Elementary
Teachers--Curricular content of elementary school science including materials
and methods of developing understanding and skills in science for children.
Course Objectives:
1.Experience science through class activities
2.Become familiar with and demonstrate understanding of Tennessee Curriculum
Standards for Science K-8 and the Blueprint for Learning
3.Become familiar with the process of science and scientific inquiry
4.Explore the interaction of development and learning
5.Develop science teaching strategies
6.Acquire skills in planning for science instruction
7.Experience the processes of science
8.Investigate websites and software pertinent to science
9.Promote mutual respect in interpersonal and group relationships through science-related
experiences
10.Become familiar with the use of technology in elementary science education
11.Develop a more positive attitude toward teaching science in the elementary
grades
Learning Outcomes:
1.The student will be able to design and categorize learning activities as
they apply to the Tennessee Science Standards.
2.The student will demonstrate understanding of the processes of science.
3.The student will develop strategies for teaching science to all students.
They will be able to formulate modifications for challenged students.
Attendance/Tardy Policy: Regular class attendance is
an integral part of the total performance required for the satisfactory
completion of this course. An unsatisfactory attendance record will adversely
affect the final grade. For each unexcused absence, there will be five
(5) points taken off the final grade. Promptness is reflective
of a disposition that is expected of all teacher education candidates.
All student s are expected to be in the classroom on time. Failure to
do so will result in one (1) point deducted from the final grade.
American Disability Act: Students with a documented
disability requiring special accommodations should contact the faculty
member and the disabilities services coordinator to complete the accommodation
request form by the end of the first week of the course. Students with
a disability requiring special accommodations should contact the office
of Disability Services (ODS). An Accommodation Request (AR) should be
completed as soon as possible, preferable by the end of the first week

Grading & Assignments:
All assignments are due on the specified date (see calendar) unless prior
permission from the instructor.
