HONORS CONTRACT--HISTORY 201

For honors credit for History 201 the following conditions must be met.

EXAMS: The student agrees to complete all of the assignments for the course. However, the student will have the option of taking an essay exam in place of the usual tests. This essay will be take-home and will be an analytical synthesis of the material presented in class and in the readings. Format for the test will be outlined when it is given.

Recognizing the honors students' choice for a greater academic challenge, all honors students taking the regular exams will be held to a higher standard of performance than the other students taking the course. By this I mean they are expected to demonstrate greater competence in writing essays and identifications.

BOOK REVIEWS: In addition, the student must read 3 additional books or scholarly monographs and write a 4-6 page precis. These books must cover the period from Prehistory to Reconstruction and must be pre-approved by the instructor. These reports are due at the following intervals: 1st report due by Monday,  18 September; 2nd report due by Monday, 23 October; 3rd report due Monday, 27 November. The instructor will provide an example of a good precis so that the students will know exactly what is required. Failure to turn in any of the book reviews will result in the lowering of one letter grade per missed review.
Students who opt to do take home exams may circumvent the book review requirements by answering one of the essay questions requiring reading a Bedford series book.
