Country and the People

Study Questions - Set 3-04S (part of the material for the Mid-term test on
March 9, 2004)
NOTE: In addition to these questions in Set 3-04S, there will also be questions
from the first quiz (sent by e-mail, and only the questions listed below in
this set) and Set 2-04S (all). See links below. You will have a map of Germany
(again) to identify the states and their capitals.; a map of Europe (again)
to identify the countries of Europe; questions on Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven
from the handouts in class; questions on history up to as far as we covered
in class, etc.
From Quiz 1 - Geography of Germany:
- Be able to identify and spell correctly the German states and their capitals.
This section will be like Quiz 1: you will have the map of Germany with the
city-states and the other states and capitals identified with a number (different
numbers from Quiz 1, of course). This time the names of the states
will not be provided at the end of the quiz.
- Regarding the rivers, etc. you will not have a separate map
this time but you need to know:
- What are the four main tributaries of the Rhine?
(Ruhr, Moselle, Main, Neckar)
- Which river flows directly into the Moselle (i.e., NOT directly into the
Rhine)? (Saar)
- Which two rivers form the eastern border of Germany? (Oder and Neisse)
- Which river flows between the Eifel and the Hunsrück?
- (alternate wording): Between which two forest/hilly areas does the Moselle
flow?
- Which river flow through Berlin then into the Havel? (Spree)
- Into which river does the Havel flow? (Elbe)
- Which river flows through Bremen? (Weser)
- Through which three capitals does the Elbe flow?
- In which major compass direction do most German rivers flow? Why?
- In which major compass direction does the Danube flow through Germany?
- Name the colors of the German flag in correct order, top to bottom.
- What animal appears on the German coat of arms?
- For what is August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben known in Germany today?
(He was the author of the words to the German national
anthem.)
- Who is the composer of the music that has been adapted for the German National
Anthem? (Haydn)
History:
- What was the significance of the battle in the Teutoburg Forest in the year
A.D. 9? (Alternate question: where and when did a significant battle take
place in the early part of the first century A.D.between the Romans and a
native Germanic force, and what was its significance for the expansion of
the Roman Empire?
- Who were the leaders of the opposing forces?
- Name some cities that were founded by the Romans along or near the Rhine
and the Danube. (Cologne [Köln], Mainz, Koblenz, Strasbourg
[in present-day France], Trier, Vienna [Austria], etc.)
- On what date was Charlemagne crowned emperor of what became known as the
Holy Roman Empire?
- What was the significance of Charlemagne's empire and its subsequent partitioning
for the development of Europe?
- Who was the first emperor of the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation"
and in what year was he crowned? (Alternate wording: who founded the "First
Empire" ["First Reich"] and in what year?)
- Who ended the "First Empire" and in what year?
- When was the "Second Empire" ["Second Reich"] founded, and who was
the chancellor of that empire?
- What three countries did Prussia defeat in order to establish a united Germany?
- Which of the three wars brought about this united Germany (the "Second Empire")
and in what year?
- What brought an end to the "Second Empire"? In what year?
- On what date was a republic declared in Germany in an effort to bring about
an end to World War I?
- By what name did this republic come to be known?
- When was Hitler named chancellor?
- In what year was the "Third Empire" ["Third Reich"] founded and
when did it end? What caused its end?

- What is the significance of the date November 9 in German history, specifically
in the years 1918, 1923, 1938, and 1989? Be able to answer with an explanation
that is more than just a few words or a "catch phrase."
- What happened of significance on Nov. 11, 1918, and how is that date commemorated
in the U.S.?
- What is "lay investiture"?
- What Emperor and what Pope were involved in a squabble over lay investiture?

- How was the conflict resolved?
- What is the meaning of the term "A walk to Canossa"? How did it get that
meaning (what historical event is alluded to?)
- What is meant by the "electoral monarchy"?
- Who were the first six "Prince Electors" (Kurfürsten)? (Archbishop
of Cologne [Köln], Archbishop of Mainz, Archbishop of Trier,
Count Palatinate, Duke of Saxony, and the Margrave of Brandenburg) You
need to be able to name one from each group by full exact title.
- Who was added as a seventh Prince Elector in 1257? (King of Bohemia)
- What was the document called that officially established (codified) the
7 Prince Electors, and in what year? (Golden Bull in 1356)
- Which dynasty ruled the "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation"
from around the middle of the 12th century to around the middle of the 13th
century? (Hohenstaufen)
- What is the significance of Fredrick Barbarossa for German folklore up into
at least the last century?
- What city in southeast Germany was founded by Henry the Lion? (Munich)
- What natural resource was the basis for a "toll road" through
this area? (salt)
- What are the two separate symbols (i.e., not displayed together) of the
city of Munich? (1. a lion and 2. a child in a monk's robe)
- What did Martin Luther post on the church door in Wittenberg in 1517, what
were the major issues, and what effect did it have?
- What was the significance of the Diet of Worms in 1521?
- Who was Tetzel and why did Martin Luther disagree so strongly with him?
- Explain what is commonly meant by the "selling of indulgences"?
- To what place did Martin Luther flee after the Diet of Worms?
- What of significance did he accomplish during his time there?
- What was the effect of the printing press on the spread of the Bible translation
and the spread of the "new religion"?
- What dialect did Luther use in his translation of the Bible? [a modified

groups were accommodated by this, and which group was left out?
- What was the Counter-Reformation?
- Which parts of "Germany" were brought back to the Church of Rome / the Catholic
Church through the Counter-Reformation, and which parts remain to this day
heavily Lutheran/Reformed?
- Was the Thirty Years War solely a religious conflict?
- What Catholic nation entered the war in support of the Protestant King of
Sweden? Why?
- What was the Peace of Westphalia in 1648?

- Explain the "5% Clause" in a German election. What was the historical reason
that led to the inclusion of that provision?
- Explain the "constructive vote of no-confidence" with regard to a German
chancellor. What was the historical reason that led to the inclusion of that
provision?
- What is the difference between a "simple vote of no-confidence" and a "constructive
vote of no-confidence"?
- For Quiz 2 material, you can expect the map of Europe
again. For those of you who know the map of Europe, these are "free" points!
