Art 2810 - Introduction to Metals 3 credit hours: no prerequisite Course objectives; This is a course focusing on the basic techniques of jewelry making. All future courses other than blacksmithing build on the knowledge gained from this course Instructional plan; The assignments will be introduced through slide lectures of both historic and contemporary jewelry and metal work. The slides will be followed up with technical and practical demonstrations of the techniques needed to complete the assignment. The assignments are based on building both technical skills and the development of conceptual content. Materials and Tools; Each student will be provided with a basic tool kit. This kit is on loan and passing grades will depend on the return of the kit in good order. Students will need to provide the materials that their work will be made from. This includes metal, solder, stones, and consumable materials such as sandpaper. The students will be able to include a wide range of other materials as is appropriate to their individual projects. Materials and supplies may be purchased in the supply store or from other venders. Text; The text may vary from term to term and will be available in the bookstore. Grading and Evaluation; Grades are based on evaluation and critique of the finished piece. Since this is an intro level course effort put forth is considered in grading. Growth and improvement are taken into consideration. Participation in group critiques is an important part of the class and will be considered as part of the grade. Attendance and arriving late for class will also affect the grade. More than three class absences will result in the final grade being lowered by one letter grade. Three times being late will count as one class absence. Missing more than 6 classes will result in the student being dropped from the class or failure of the class. Incomplete grades are only granted for medical situations with a doctor’s excuse in accordance with T.T.U.’s policy.
