Art 3820 - Metals Studio - Blacksmithing 1-3 credit hours: no prerequisite Course objectives; This course will serve as an introductory course in working hot steel. Both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches will be explored. Concept and completion of the assignments is important. This course is repeatable and content will change from term to term. As the course is repeated projects become more involved and the student takes on more responsibility for determining their own direction. Instructional plan; the class begins with leaning the basics of fire building and control for enhancement of the ability to manipulate hot steel. Methodology of working safely is strongly stressed. Some assignments will be introduced through slide lectures featuring both historic and contemporary iron and metal work. The slides will be followed with technical and practical demonstrations of the technique needed to complete the assignment. The building of technical skill and conceptual content are stressed. Materials and tools; The studio is well equipped with basic tools which will be available to the student. Students will need to provide personal safety equipment and the materials that their work will be made from. The students will be able to include a wide range of other materials as is appropriate to their individual projects. Materials and supplies may be purchased in the supply store or from other venders. Text; The text may change from term to term and will be available in the bookstore. Grading and Evaluation; Grades are based on evaluation and critique of the finished project. Growth and improvement are taken into consideration. Participation in group critiques is an important part of the class and will be considered as part of the grade. Attendance and arriving late for scheduled classes will also affect the grade. More than 3 class absences will result in the final grade being lowered one full grade. Being late for 3 classes will be considered on class absence. Missing more than 6 classes will result in being dropped from the class or failure of the class. Incomplete grades are only granted for medical situations with a doctor’s excuse in accordance with T.T.U.’s policy.
