ECE Digital CAD Laboratory (BN 320/324)

  1. NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE LAB AT ANY TIME.

  2. If you have a complaint or suggestion about the CadLab, send email or discuss it with Dr. Haggard.

  3. Installation of personal software is ABSOLUTELY prohibited.

This includes screen savers, utilities, shareware, freeware, stuff downloaded from the Web, and EVERYTHING ELSE. This means you cannot even install something for just a few minutes to try it out! Not even to YOUR USB drive, floppy, CD, or DVD or network directory! You will lose all computer privileges for the semester if you install anything on these machines.

  4. For security, you cannot use another person's account in the lab! Everyone's account is private and it is wrong to get their username and password and login as someone else. This is a serious violation that can result in disabling your account. You are not generally supposed to share your files with each other; but if you are supposed to share them (on teams, for example) we will set up special team accounts that every team member can access with their usual usernames and passwords, separate from your private accounts.

  5. For the convenience of other users, you MUST logoff anytime you leave the PC for more than 15 minutes (for YOUR protection, so no one else can mess up your account and files!). If you are leaving for just a few minutes, place a note on the keyboard with your expected return time and lock the PC until you return to protect your work.

  6. Long simulation/calculation runs on a LOCKED PC are only allowed from 10PM to 8AM. Locked PCs are NOT allowed during normal lab hours of 8AM to 10PM, without special written permission from Dr. Haggard (rhaggard@tntech.edu or x3453) and an appropriate sign placed on the PC.

  7. Do NOT mess with any hardware in the Lab!

    Never move
any boards, power supplies, wires or anything else. If you have to use different hardware, change to another PC that has the desired hardware. All the equipment is sensitive, and may be damaged by any kind of unnecessary touching or movement. Don't do it! Tell Dr. Haggard or a CadLab Assistant if there seems to be a problem.

  8. To limit wear on the CD/DVD drives and to allow for CD’s needed for classwork, they are not to be used for your own software CDs or as audio/video players. So don't mess with the CD/DVD drives! The CD/DVD drives can be used for your personal removable storage, but not for running programs or playing audio/video.

  9. Internet audio or video sources are NOT to be used, unless they are specifically required for an ECE class, due to the high bandwidth consumed. Using these sources may prevent or hinder others from accomplishing their school-related work.

  10. Printers:

    • Printers are to be used for designated ECE course work only. Any personal documents or stuff for non-ECE classes should be printed in the open computer labs run by the computer center.

    • Don't print PowerPoint slides of lectures, especially in color, if you are given copies in class.

    • Don't print World Wide Web pages, except for directly-related ECE classwork.

  11. Lab Use Restrictions:

    WHY?
Numerous complaints by students about excessive, unfair use of CAD Lab computers for work that could easily be done on other, non-CAD-Lab, computers. This is especially a problem because of the heavy use near the end of the semester for projects. Also, the printers are being used excessively for non-essential work, using up our ink supplies. If there are any questions, contact Dr. Haggard (rhaggard@tntech.edu or X3453).

    WHEN and WHAT?
Whenever the lab is at least 3/4 full (21 out of 28 PCs in BN320/324), the following restrictions apply:

    • No work is allowed on the CAD lab PCs except that which uses the special ECE software unavailable in the general-purpose PC labs. You must use the general-purpose computer-center PC labs, such as BN207, for all other work.

    • This means it is still OK to work with the following types of software:
Altera, Xilinx, Mentor Graphics, Labview, 68HC12 Assembler, Visio, Maxwell.

    • You are NOT allowed to play games or use common tools such as Word, Powerpoint, Excel, or World Wide Web browsers (except for specific ECE class work requiring the WWW).

    • Note that the above restrictions DO NOT APPLY when the lab is LESS than 3/4 full.

    Enforcement:
This is a neighborhood watch arrangement. Students and Lab Workers need to watch for violations and gently notify the offending student. If the student does NOT cooperate, report it to Dr. Haggard (rhaggard@tntech.edu or X3453) as soon as possible. State the problem and give the student's name if you know it, otherwise give the machine name (like BN320-04) and time of violation.

What if I don't follow the rules?
Your user account will be disabled for rest of the semester, or the offending software will be disabled so that it is impossible for anyone to violate the restrictions. We hope this doesn't happen. Let's all cooperate to get our work done!

  12. Some students are ignoring the most basic and important Digital CAD Lab rules. You are messing up the machines for all users when you do so! In particular:
    • NEVER, NEVER install ANY kind of software on these machines, even in your own private network directory or removable storage (especially those "enhancements" automatically installed from the World Wide Web)!!
    • NEVER, NEVER mess with any Windows settings on the computers (such as networking, start menu, and control panel)!!
    • If we discover who has been doing these things, your lab access will be TERMINATED for rest of the semester.
  13. Also, you must follow the standard TTU University Computing Policies, available on-line at http://www2.tntech.edu/its/policies/.
