Calliope Hummingbird (Stellula calliope)

 

Abundance:  Occasional (1 record in 1 Tennessee county, involving a single individual).

Status: Visitor during fall and early winter (1 record); presumably, future birds might occur during late winter and early spring, establishing the species as a true Winter Resident of the Region; banding record; photograph.

Information on Records: 

Late October-19 December 2000 (1 immature male) 3 km north of Monterey, Putnam County, Tennessee (Betty Bright, Harold Bright photo, m. ob.; Knight 2001a, 2001b), banded (25 November 2000, Portia McMillan, Chris Sloan), photo.

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: No registrations.

Habitat: This hummingbird visited feeders situated on the porch of a home located in the countryside north of Monterey; some thick vegetation was near the porch.

RemarksThis Calliope Hummingbird was not observed following the very cold night of 19/20 December 2000 and may have moved on or succumbed to the extreme conditions.

    This record represented the second occurrence of this western hummingbird in Tennessee (Knight 2001a).
