Abundance:  Rare (records in 3 counties, 1 in Kentucky and 2 in Tennessee, each involving a single bird).

Status: Transient during late summer (1 record) and early fall (2 records); photograph (see link below).

15 August 1982 (1--age unspecified) Powersburg, Wayne County, Kentucky (Roger Guffey fide Dennis Coskren; Stamm 1983a).

10 July 1990 (1--immature) east Cookeville near the intersection of Rts. 70N and 111, Putnam County, Tennessee (Stephen J. Stedman; Stedman 1993).

10 September 2004 (1--immature) Randolph Pond, Walter Stone Rd., White County, Tennessee (Stephen J. Stedman photo, Douglas A. Downs; Casteel 2005a).

Habitat: Usually inhabits extensive, rich wetlands, but may appear at almost any wet area or open field during the period of post-breeding dispersal. 

RemarksImmatures more likely to occur than adults.
