Ancient Bristlecone Pines, White Mountain,
California, 11,500 feet elevation - June, 2004
Up to 4500 years old, these are the oldest living things on Earth. They thrive in the
white dolomitic gravels of the White Mountains (thus the name), but the climate at
11,500 feet has changed over the last few thousand years, and germination
of new trees occurs primarily between 10,000 and 11,000 feet.
